Associate General Counsel
Michael J. Brignati is Associate General Counsel at The Pennsylvania State University. Prior to joining the Office of General Counsel, Michael was Intellectual Property (“IP”) Counsel for Novo Nordisk Inc. (“Novo Nordisk”) in Princeton, New Jersey. While at Novo Nordisk, Michael strategically developed and maintained comprehensive patent portfolios in diabetes hemophilia, hormone therapies, and inflammation, handling all aspects of patent preparation and prosecution as well as enforcement and defense thereof. Michael also counselled clients in technology transfer, including drafting and negotiating license agreements, cooperative research agreements, material transfer agreements, and confidentiality agreements. Before joining Novo Nordisk, Michael was an IP associate at Troutman Sanders LLP in Atlanta, Georgia, where his practice focused on patent prosecution and litigation and intellectual property transactions across various technical fields, including biotechnology, biologics, pharmaceuticals, chemistry, medical devices, biomedical and chemical engineering, electronics, and materials science.
Michael earned his Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from The Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, where he was awarded a National Institute of Health Fellowship, and his J.D. from the University of Georgia, with honors, where he served as the Executive Articles Editor for the Journal of Intellectual Property Law. Michael’s research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, and he has spoken at several national IP conferences.
